Prefinished vs Unfinished Oak Doors: Which Should You Choose?

When choosing new internal oak doors, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to buy them prefinished or unfinished.

Both options can look excellent, and one isn’t automatically better than the other. The right choice depends on how much work you want to do, the finish you’re trying to achieve and whether you’re fitting the doors yourself or paying a joiner.

I’ve put this guide together to explain the real differences and help you decide which option is right for your home.

What is a prefinished oak door?

A prefinished oak door has already been professionally finished during manufacturing. The oak veneer is protected with a clear coating that brings out the natural grain and gives the door a consistent appearance.

This means there is considerably less work to do before installation. You can browse our full range of prefinished oak doors to see the different styles available.

Prefinished doors are a particularly good choice if you’re replacing several doors at once. Finishing six or eight doors by hand takes time, creates mess and can delay the job while each coat dries.

A door such as the Suffolk Essential prefinished internal oak door provides a clean, modern appearance without requiring you to apply a complete finish yourself.

The advantages of prefinished oak doors

The main advantage is convenience. Most of the finishing work has already been completed, so the door can be prepared and installed much more quickly.

You also get a consistent finish across every door. This matters when you’re buying multiple doors for a hallway, landing or complete renovation. Hand-finishing doors can occasionally produce slight differences in colour, especially if different amounts of oil or finish are applied.

Prefinished doors are also a sensible option if you don’t have a suitable place to finish them. Oak doors should ideally be laid flat while the finish is applied and allowed to dry properly. That isn’t always practical in a busy family home.

The main benefits are:

  • Less preparation and finishing work
  • A consistent professional appearance
  • Faster installation
  • Less mess inside the home
  • No need to choose and apply a separate finishing product

However, “prefinished” doesn’t necessarily mean the door can be fitted without any further attention. If the door is trimmed, drilled or cut during installation, the exposed areas may need sealing. Always follow the fitting and finishing instructions supplied with the door.

What is an unfinished oak door?

An unfinished oak door is supplied without its final protective coating. It will need to be finished correctly before or immediately after installation, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Our unfinished oak door collection includes both traditional and contemporary styles.

The main reason to choose an unfinished door is control. You can select a compatible finish that suits the appearance you want, whether that’s a very natural look or a slightly warmer tone.

The Worcester internal oak door, for example, is supplied unfinished, allowing you to choose the final appearance yourself.

The advantages of unfinished oak doors

Unfinished doors offer more flexibility. If you already have oak flooring, furniture, skirting boards or other timber features, you may want to choose a finish that complements them.

They can also be useful when replacing only one or two doors in a property. With careful product selection and testing, you may be able to achieve a closer match to your existing doors.

There is usually more work involved, though. The door must be properly prepared and the finish needs to be applied evenly to all required surfaces and edges. You also need to allow enough drying time before the door is handled or installed.

It’s important not to leave an unfinished oak door unprotected. Timber can absorb moisture from the surrounding environment, potentially leading to staining, movement or damage. You should also avoid using an unsuitable product. Always check the door’s instructions before applying oils, waxes, varnishes or other finishes.

Are prefinished oak doors worth the extra cost?

For many customers, yes.

A prefinished door may cost more initially, but you also need to consider the cost of finishing products and the time required to apply them. If you’re paying a professional to finish the doors, the labour cost can reduce or completely remove the saving made by buying unfinished doors.

If you enjoy DIY and want a specific appearance, an unfinished door can still be the better option. But if your main priorities are speed, consistency and minimal hassle, I would normally choose prefinished.

What about glazed oak doors?

The same choice applies when buying glazed doors. You can find both finished and unfinished options within our range of oak glazed doors.

Glazed oak doors are ideal for rooms or hallways where you want to share natural light without losing the separation provided by an internal door.

For a contemporary option, the Worcester prefinished oak door with clear glass combines three glazed panels with a ready-finished oak design.

If you would prefer to choose the finish yourself, the Treviso oak door with clear glass is supplied unfinished.

Before choosing clear glass, think about where the door will be fitted. Clear glazing works well between living areas, kitchens, dining rooms and hallways. For rooms where more privacy is needed, an obscure-glass design may be more suitable.

Which option should you buy?

I would choose a prefinished oak door if:

  • You want the door installed with minimal additional work
  • You’re replacing several doors
  • You want a consistent finish throughout the house
  • You don’t have the space or time to finish doors properly
  • You’re happy with the factory-applied appearance

I would choose an unfinished oak door if:

  • You want greater control over the final colour or sheen
  • You need to coordinate the doors with existing timber
  • You’re comfortable applying the finish yourself
  • Your joiner is including finishing within the installation
  • You don’t mind the additional preparation and drying time

There isn’t a wrong answer. Prefinished doors are more convenient, while unfinished doors give you more control.
